How to Become Invisible is a series of large-scale watercolor portraits depicting the shadows of underpaid and often unrecognized cultural workers. Rather than painting their likenesses, the works focus on the shadows they cast, making visible those whose labor sustains exhibitions while frequently remaining unseen. Each portrait emerged through a collaborative drawing session accompanied by conversations about working conditions, recognition, and the invisible forms of care that shape the cultural field. The project explores the tension between visibility and absence, using the shadow as both a portrait and a metaphor for the structures that determine whose work is acknowledged. By combining painting with documentary interviews, How to Become Invisible reflects on the people who support artistic production from behind the scenes and asks how their presence might be remembered and represented.
